You know what every new mom needs (other than a day at the spa)? Food delivered to your door. And when that food allows you to chow down on gourmet-looking dinners every night in 30 minutes or less…well, you can pretty much cue the angels singing! For our wedding anniversary my parents gave my husband and I just that with the incredible gift of Terra’s Kitchen, which is a meal delivery service centering on farm fresh and sustainably sourced ingredients. If any of you out there are thinking about trying this one (or any food service), I’m here to share my entire week’s experience with Terra!
First off, ordering through Terra’s Kitchen is pretty simple and fun. Once you create an account you can check out all the meals available that week, along with their nutritional information and recipe card to see how long they take. I honestly was really impressed with their offerings. They take a lot of classic meals that people are familiar with and amp them up to create a dinner that feels amazing when you prepare it yourself, yet not so scary that you’re afraid to attempt it. For instance, my husband and I like to eat a simple lemon salmon from time to time and through this service I was able to create a BBQ salmon with caramelized pineapple relish instead. Totally took it to the next level!
Additionally, the choices are very healthy and there’s plenty to choose from. I had 63 meals to browse through so you’re sure to find something that interests you. They also have yummy-looking vegan meals, along with a lot of vegan, vegetarian and protein side dishes and smoothies to add into your meals
The food arrives in a mini fridge and at first I was a little taken aback at how heavy this thing was. Yeah it’s a fridge so I shouldn’t have expected it to be light, but as a petite woman it took a little bit of effort to get it into the door while keeping my dog and baby out of the way. I also felt like I had to be the incredible hulk to lift this thing on the kitchen counter! If you don’t have a dog or a baby that want to grab everything, then it’s probably best to keep this on the ground. You also need to put the fridge back outside by the next day for them to pick it up so don’t go dragging this thing around too far!
Once you unload everything it’s also pretty overwhelming to see how many containers there are. I felt like there was a huge amount of waste here, but the company states how everything is recyclable and encourages its users to continue with that when they throw out these containers. It also makes a lot of sense to separate everything into all these containers to make the dinner quick and easy. Although I think I would have been happier if they had an option to send the containers back so they could reuse them since I’m sure not everyone takes the time to recycle/upcycle all of these.
Preparing the Dinners
Ah, the fun part! Time to actually prepare & eat these meals. I ordered 4 meals for 2 people and each meal was either 30 minutes or 20 minutes to make. All ingredients came pretty much ready to go with only some that needed light chopping or seasoning. This would be a really fun way to introduce a child to cooking since everything’s pre-measured and the recipes are simple to follow.
My first meal was Honey-Balsamic Glazed Pork with Cucumber-Strawberry Salad. The salad portion of this meal was quick, easy and delicious. I’ve actually included this salad into my weekly routine since it’s really refreshing for summer. The pork portion of this though took a lot longer than the recipe card had stated. About an extra 15-2o minutes longer, which was disappointing but still came out tasting great. I do think the size of the pork chops vary when they send them out so you’ll need to watch meat carefully to make sure everything is fully cooked.
The rest of the week went very smoothly and really impressed me in terms of taste. Most of the meat I used was organic, and all the ingredients looked fresh and had a lot of flavor. One of the meals we chose was a steak meal, and I was particularly impressed at how thick this organic steak was they gave me. This would have been $35 easily at the grocery store. We also had a Turkey Taco Bowl meal that has turned into another weekly favorite in our house!
Additionally, I felt the meals were well proportioned and filled me up without needing a dessert. I read some reviews online stating the opposite, but I felt these offered more than enough to eat for both my husband and myself. Almost all of them came with a side of vegetables or salad and rice, making it balanced and filling.
My favorite part of this whole experience was being introduced to new and exciting meals again, along with realizing how easy it is to create great dinners in your home. It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut and this made dinner exciting again. All the ingredients were normal (nothing exotic or hard to find) and made me not only feel like a rockstar when they were done, but made me feel healthier as well.
My least favorite part? This is a subscription service. You can skip weeks but you’ll have to continue doing so if you don’t want this delivered each week. This is something I wish they would change since it would be easier to just sign in when I want to order instead of having to skip weeks.
So would I do it again? Absolutely! I will say that this is a little expensive though but part of the price includes having everything delivered to you, along with ingredients that are washed, pre-measured and basically fully prepared for you. The longest part of each meal was the meat, but the non-meat parts of the meals were so tasty that I’m thinking about trying more of their vegetarian dinners next time. Overall, I had a lot of fun with Terra and enjoyed this a lot with my husband. I wouldn’t do this every week because of price, but I will be continuing to include this every once in a while into our routine!
Anyways, I hope this helps anyone out there thinking about including a meal delivery service into their routine. I personally would recommend trying it. The convenience alone is worth it, but you’re going to end up having a lot of fun as well!
